I've owned the 1986 VW Jetta for 5 years now and have 3 years of investigating and trying different ideas.
A few notes from 2006:
- I noticed that in cold weather especially in the winter, the oil (15w-40w diesel oil) in the Jetta was very thick and oil pressure light took a little to long to go out. So I decided to try some AMSOIL synthetic oil. What a difference in starting the Jetta in cold weather! The oil light goes out much sooner that before. and it lubes the engine better.
- With the engine having about 240,000 miles I thought it would be a good idea to try a product called MOTORSILK in the engine. It's a one time use engine oil additive to protect the engine parts by coting the metal parts with Boron.
