Veggie Oil Car Conversion Workshop – Learn how to convert your diesel vehicle to run on multiple fuels and save thousands of dollars per year. In this intensive 1-day workshop we'll focus on converting a Volkswagen Jetta to run on used vegetable oil in addition to regular diesel or biodiesel. Students will participate in installing the conversion kit and will work side-by-side with veggie car guru Kenneth Oldrid and several automotive specialists. Ken is a conversions expert who runs his own company (GreenDiesels.net) and has taught workshops at numerous venues including Yestermorrow Design/Build School. Virginio, the course organizer, has run his '86 Jetta (a former junkyard car) on vegetable oil for over 5 years. He has attended numerous workshops on car conversions and noticed that few tend to complete the job before the day is over. In this course, we will do any prep work necessary to ensure that you'll experience the full conversion by the end of the day. Other veggie cars will be onsite for display and will provide students with an opportunity to see different conversion kits. Handouts to be provided. Previous automotive knowledge not necessary but may be helpful.

  • What You’ll Learn: The basics of how a diesel engine operates and why vegetable oil can be used to run any type of diesel engine including cars, trucks, tractors, generators, etc. As well, you'll learn what you need to buy to convert your vehicle, how to install it, and how to maintain it.
  • Time: [NOTE: DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED] 8:30 - 5:00 pm, Pizza Lunch included. Coffee served at 8:30, course starts promptly at 9 AM
  • Cost: $95, covers workshop, supplies & lunch

  • Location: Lowell, MA—at a clean, well-lit indoor garage at Chris Bacon Motorsport, easily accessible off several highways
  • Instructor Bios: Kenneth Oldrid—Ken is the owner of GreenDiesels.net, a straight vegetable oil (SVO) conversion company. He has a wide interdisciplinary background; he recieved a BS in environmental science from UMass with a focus in biology, chemistry and geology. He has modified more than 100 vehicles (cars, trucks, vans, busses, tractors) to SVO and has led a dozen workshops on the subject. Ken has personally logged over 100,000 miles driving on waste vegetable oil. In 2006, Ken started working as a renewable energy field technician for CV solar and wind, installing and repairing PV and wind on and off grid systems.
